Who is DJ Ekin?

He is “Tampa’s Most Connected DJ…” An entertainer, a businessman, an individual.

How did you get started?

My dad actually gave me my very 1st set of turntables & with big brothers as DJ’s…well the rest is history. Its kinda cool being around my older brothers now & them talking about how proud that they are of me that I stuck with it.

At what point did you know that DJing is something that you wanted to do ?

I have to honestly say…and this is being straight up…I’m not even sure if dj’ing was ultimately what I wanted to do or whether it became my way in. Don’t get me wrong, I have a strong passion for it; but I think that the entertainment industry as a whole is a much deeper passion for me.

How did you get the title Tampa’s most connected DJ?

It actually started out as a marketing move in the beginning. But as I began to really make a few moves, it became evident that the connections were what was really missing from a lot of what I wanted to do.

What are some differences and similarities between Orlando and Tampa?

Orlando’s scene is a little more touristy to me, whereas Tampa seems to have a bit more of a local scene going here. I guess that I’m speaking from a musical standpoint more so than anything though. I will have to say that when I lived in Orlando, I never heard as much local music as I tend to hear in Tampa.

What is the local music scene like in Tampa?

The local scene here is a little confusing to me here in Tampa. On the one hand you have a lot of records that are huge in this market but they can’t seem to get out of the city. Then on the hand you have to wonder at what point does someone deeply involved in it take a stand and really go for making it a movement?

Who are some power players in your city?

I’d have to say my PD Ron Shepard (WBTP 95.7 The BEAT) & Wild’s PD Orlando are two pretty big power players here. Competition aside, they both sit in some pretty big chairs when it comes to the music ultimately being heard by the masses here in Tampa. I’d also have to say Plies because his movement speaks for itself. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of cats doing their thing here; its just that these three dudes come to mind right now.

What would you say has been the highlight of your career thus far?

Getting the gig at the BET Soundstage in Orlando. That was the start of my movement here in Florida. Everything else came after I got that BET look.

Tell us a little bit about your non for profit organization….

It’s called ConnXions & its built upon the premise of teaching young adults the power of building relationships…one handshake at at time. I think that we’ve spent so much time with teaching kids that they need this education, this bit of technology, etc. that we forgot about the simplest act of just being a good person first & how to interact & build with other people. That is what ConnXions is striving for…relationship building. You can find out more about it at www.ConnXions.org.

As a seasoned and well known DJ – what advice can you give up and coming artists and deejays trying to make their mark?

Do YOU first. You have to be the best YOU that you can be before you can be anything else. Also, you have to believe; because if you don’t, how can you expect anyone else to? And lastly, let your word mean something. Be a stand-up individual and no one can ever take that away from you.

What’s the worst mistake you think an up and coming artist can make?

Not reading up on an industry that they claim that they want to be a part of and thinking that its a DJ’s JOB to play THEIR music.

What the best way a local artist can get their music to a club DJ with hopes of getting spins?

I would say build a relationship & just give it to them. Most DJ’s aren’t the bad guy…but it needs to be understood that just because you give a DJ your music, he/she isn’t obligated to play your music.

He was born in Spanish Harlem, New York City under the Scorpion moon to a Cuban mother, Peruvian father, and never met his dad’s side of the family. At age 8, his mother packed up and moved into an apartment on Jamaica Ave. and 150 St. in Queens, NY. She remarried when he was 5. His new step dad and him had many issues. At the young age of 14, circumstances led him to move out of his home. Forced to grow up early, his street friends became his second family. During this time, house parties were popping up everywhere and playing the newest music from artists like Kool G. Rap, Big Daddy Kane, Special Ed, LL Cool J, and Slick Rick just to name a few. Amazed at the way this new culture he was introduced to called Hip Hop made him feel, he began molding his own words together. It was both a work of art and a sort of stress reliever at the same time. Armed with this new way to vent his frustrations, communicate desires and chronicle events, a star was born. He and his friends formed a group called Justus and performed all over NYC. In 2000 he relocated to Orlando, Florida due to events beyond his control. The pace was much slower. It was a different world altogether. In 2001 he became a new dad. Never did he envision that his life would be so different after that. He soon created Pure Cash Entertainment, his own record label and signed his first two artists- Lady Lyric and Durt Po. ASCAP accepted him as both a writer and a publisher under the name Pure Cash Music. Fueled with more purpose and reason to accomplish all of his goals, he put out his first solo album, Alias, which he half produced, fully wrote and recorded himself. After receiving great feedback from everyone that heard it he began recording at a very rapid and consistent pace. Many releases followed including Got Cash?, Faces Of Cash, Year Of The Hustler, Pentoxicated, The Show, Indie’n Ice, and more. Vivid, live and energy filled stage shows set the pace that presented him with opportunities to perform alongside popular artists such as Snoop Dogg, Rakim, Twista, Kool G. Rap and Pitbull just to name a few. The Queens-bred emcee has received considerable coverage in The Orlando Weekly, OZONE Magazine, Orlando Sentinel, Hip Hop Weekly, Foundation Magazine, DJ Booth.net, BET’s Rap City, World Star Hip Hop, Digiwaxx, Impact Press and of course Pure Cash Magazine. He has had his music played in just about every country and been featured on over 50 mixtapes worldwide. In 2008 he created a new way of exposing himself and his record label with Pure Cash Magazine. Spotlighting independent artists and models in the magazine has opened up many new doors and opportunities and served as a great form of inspiration for new concepts. Currently, he has a discography of 4 studio albums, 5 mixtapes, 6 videos and a library of over 300 songs and freestyles. Indie’n Fire, his latest album scheduled for release in August of 2009, sets a mature and revolutionized tone of what he believes real hip hop should sound like. A more personal album than his previous works, Indie’n Fire elaborates on topics deeply rooted to the struggles, successes, adventures and obstacles that independent artists encounter on the long and bumpy road to stardom. Fidel Cashflow, aka The Cuban Cowboy, CEO of Pure Cash Entertainment and Pure Cash Magazine is no stranger to heavy hustle and constant grind. He breaks down his name as such: Frankly I Do Everything Luxurious – Cesar Always Spits Hot Flow. He is an artist, writer, poet, performer, editor, publisher, father, son, brother, and overall businessman who understands and truly believes that if you want something bad enough, do whatever it takes and don’t give up on your journey to get it, it will be yours.

Basically the main character was from the future and when I picked the name I felt I was the future of hip-hop. So it was also catchy, and name hard to forget. lol

What has been your biggest accomplishment? My biggest accomplishment so far is a lot of things I’ve done, not just one. I have been on several college radio stations, and I currently have a track the me and my group (Blakk Money) made in rotation on WSCR365 a iTunes radio station. We also put together a tour The Ready To Take Flight ‘On Demand’ Tour and we hit states such as NY, PA and DE so all of those in one would be my biggest accomplishments.

What has been your most difficult challenge? My most difficult challenge is trying to prove that I’m cut from a different cloth as far as my lyrical ability, song concepts, metaphores and punchlines.

What makes you different? What makes me different is my versitile style and ability to switch up my style depeneding on the track.

How Long have you been making music? I have be making music since 2001.

What artists inspire you? What’s artist inspire me is Jay-Z, Ludacris and Fabolous.

How would you define your style of music? My style is mainly based on punchlines and metaphores.

What teams are you affiliated with? Blakk Money

Who are some artists that you have worked with? Jack Spa77ow, D-Magic, Young $pin$, Young L, G4 Weaz and J-Brook.

Who would you like to collab with? Jay-Z, Fabolous, Ludacris, Keyshia Cole, Keri Hilson just to name a few.

Where do you see the future of music? I see myself real big, my work ethic and hunger will speak for it self.

Where do you see yourself in 1 year? I see myself signed to an major record label, or a sucsessful independent label.

Describe yourself in one word: Spectacular

Any shout outs? I want to shout out Danithia J. from unsigneddebut.com, Dave Camp from WSCR365, and Don Bleek

Zelakhan has been pursuing his dream of becoming a heavy-weight in the world of Hip-Hop and entertainment since the age of 14.This Cleveland, Ohio based artist is currently working with platinum selling producers: 4th Disciple (Wu-Tang Clan, Killarmy and Sunz of Man) and DJLord Jazz (Lords of the Underground.) Inspired by artists such as Nas,Wu-Tang Clan, 2Pac, N.W.A, Outkast, Notorious B.I.G., Jay-Z, Slick Rick, Run DMC, KRS-1 and Big Daddy Kane, Zelakhan has created his own unique style of emceeing. Strapped with a witty flow and a remarkable ability to tap into the listeners deepest emotions, Zelakhan is ready to show the world that he can be a pioneer in the Midwest Hip-Hop movement which is currently overlooked by the East Coast, West Coast, and the Dirty South. Zelakhan has released several projects which include; City On My Shoulders (2008), Lyfe Movement The Underground Railroad (1998), Hoodfactor The Factz (2002) and Money & Muscle Vol 1 (2003). He has recorded songs with Killah Priest, Islord of Killarmy and The Hillside Scramblers. He has also been the opening act for KRS-1, Raekwon & Ghostface, Killarmy, Lil Flip, Cappadonna, Ludacris, Keith Murray, Murder Inc., Wu-Tang Clan, Method Man, Big Daddy Kane, Killah Priest, The Roots, Bone Thugs n Harmony, Capone & Noreaga and Joe Budden. Zelakhan was nominated for 2006 Ohio Hip Hop Awards ‘New Artist’ and 2008 Ohio Hip Hop Awards ‘Best Male Artist’ and ‘Best Lyricist’. He is also featured on Z107.9fm where you can hear his intros for on-air personalities Tropikana and Jay Fresh. He has been featured in The Lake County News Herald and The Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Where can we hear your stuff?
Z107.9fm (cleveland, ohio)
www.rebelarmyradio.t83.com

How did you get that name?
My first name is Lozell. I was going by Zel back in the day. I called myself Minister Zelakhan in a cypher in reference to Louis Farrakhan and everybody in the room went crazy. People been calling me Zelakhan since then.

What has been your biggest accomplishment?
Spending 2 months in Staten Island, NY with 4th Disciple and Wu-Tang Clan. 4th invited me to come stay with him in Park Hill a while back. I’ve opened up for almost every major artist that performed in Cleveland but this was the biggest of my accomplishments because I recorded in my first multi-million dollar studio for the first time. I was learning the ins and outs of the industry first hand.
What has been your most difficult challenge?: Coming from a forgotten market such as Cleveland, Ohio. We don’t get the exposure like the other markets get. Labels and scouts don’t come to Cleveland looking for artist.

What makes you different?
I think the passion I express makes me different from alot of artist today. Alot of this new music is watered down and recycled.

What projects are you working on?
Working on an album with Phoenix Jones called G.O.D. (Grind Or Die)…Also working on a solo mixtape called Money & Muscle Vol. 2 with DJ Jack Da Rippa….Also working on my solo Debut called Carpe’ Diem. All these projects will have production from Yonny, LT Moe, 4th Disciple, Kickdrums, Matlock, Lord Jazz and Mauly T

Where are you from originally?
I’m originally from Painesville, Ohio. Shout out to Homeworth Ave.

How Long have you been making music?
I’ve been writing since I was like 9 or 10 but started recording at 14

What artists inspire you?
Nas, Jay-Z, Andre 3000 and Big Boi, Alicia Keys, Sade, 2Pac, Biggie, Kanye, 50, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, T.I., Wu-Tang Clan, Ludacris, Dr. Dre and Snoop, Lil Wayne

How would you define your style of music?
Street Realily Hip Hop..It all comes from the heart. I run with the feelings and emotions that I go through on a daily basis. I’ve seen everything from the projects to the college dorms so I have a wide range of creativity.

What teams are you affiliated with?
Black Lion Movement, Team Tuck, Tek Set

Who are some artists that you have worked with?
4th Disciple from Wu-Tang Clan/Killarmy, DJ Lord Jazz from Lords of the Underground, Killah Priest, Timbo King, Islord, Yonny

Who would you like to collab with?
Nas, Jay-Z, Outkast, T.I., Raekwon, Ghostface and Method Man, Ludacris, Alicia Keys, Keyshia Cole, Beyonce, Ciara, Dr. Dre, Timbaland, Mick Boogie, Young Chris and State Property, 50, Young Buck, Scarface, Lil Wayne

Where do you see the future of music?
In my hands!! Cleveland, Ohio got next. It’s our turn. Everybody has had their turn. It’s time for Cleveland and the rest of Ohio to unite and get this cake like the South doing right now.

Where do you see yourself in 1 year?
ALIVE! Getting paid off this game whether it be with a major or indie. No matter when, where and how, the money gotta be right!

Describe yourself in one word.
KING
Any shout outs?
The Siler, Stokley, Walling, Noble, Ware and Jones family tree. PVC, Bula, The Land, Columbus. 4th Disciple, Paulie Rhyme, Lord Jazz, Yonny, Shugabooga, Optiks, Sound Techs, DeApp at Ohio Sound Lab, Nikki Swift, DJ Jack Da Rippa, G-Spot, Tropikana and Jay Fresh from z107.9fm, Rebel Army Radio.

What’s up Lady Lyric. What you been up to? Been putting in some work trying to complete my mix-tape which has been put together by Dj Tito of Core Latino and I am currently pushing my single “I like It” which has been getting air play over seas, in Japan and on numerous radio stations in different states.

Tell me about growing up in Queens then moving down to the South? Growing up in Queens was not always so easy I grew up real quickly got involved with a lot of street life situations made some wrong choices but, they made me street smart and opened my eyes. Moving to the South was not a easy move pace of life was slower than my everyday hustle but I am now acustomed to it and love where im at.

How did it mold you into the person you are today? It just made me a tougher chick learned how to grind on my own. I see things different work harder for what I want.

What females MC’s did you look up to growing up? Queen Latifah, MC Lyte, Lauren Hill all positive females in the game at that time.

What do you think of the state of females in the game today? I do not think a lot of them take the game serious for example Ghost Writers which truly means they are not putting their heart onto a track nor expressing how they truley feel which means they are not creative enough or are just actresses reading a scripts. Don’t get me wrong I don’t feel all of the females in the game are that way but the majority are and that I cannot respect. But, then again I must say no a days it’s not just females in the game it goes both ways.

Any female MC’s out there who you think shouldn’t be rapping at all? I think every individual has the right to do what they feel. I may feel someone shouldn’t be spitten but, the next person may think that person is the truth. Who I do like however is Charlie B More, Shawnna, Lil Kim and a few others.

How do you feel about female’s that use their sex appeal to sell records? Get that paper if that works for you and you got it then “FLAUNT IT”

You linked up with Bum Squad Djz how did that come about? Well, how that came about was Dj Latin prince who is the Founder of Bum Squad Djz had his ear to the streets heard about me and we connected he recpects my grind and loves what I do and I love the movement. Bum Squad is a family and they all welcomed me in with open arms I am very proud to be a part of the Family.

How is it being the only female over at Pure Cash Entertainment which I understand is who manages you? That is correct I am managed by Pure Cash Ent. It’s all good Dirt Po and Cash are my brothers they look out for the chick but most importantly I hold it down on my own I am a well rounded artist not just “A Female Emcee”

What’s next for Lady Lyric? Right now I am just focusing on me trying to get what I already have out and heard. Also looking into doing some independent films get my acting on a little bit trying to hustle my way through the door.

Tell me about your new mixtape which will be dropping soon. Street life/Real life through my eyes from my heart and also some party joints to make you wanna move your body *laughs* it’s just a little intro to what’s coming next.

Lady Lyric thanks for your time is there anything else you would like to share with us or any one you would like to shout out? Just stick with the chick I got a lot of things cooking right now. Big ups to everyone who holds me down on the daily.

Fidel Cash Flow (Pure Cash Ent.) Dj Latin Prince and the Fam (Bum Squad Djz) Mr. Wiz Hoffa (Noize Mob Djz) Jesse Jazz (Full Impact All Starz) Evil Eye (Crown City Records) Who I have been putting some work in with FULL CLIP! My better half Cross Breed (Prezidential Recordz) my Fam for holding me down and my son the reason I grind harder.
